As I look back, this was the first time that I served as an official
in Campbell River, as I was still coaching at the Victoria Jaycees
boxing club, and had taken a year off of the board of the
Victoria Athletic Association after three years.

This is the story that I wrote to cover the show from a
Victoria perspective:

THREE TRAVEL TO TRIPLE WIN: by Brian Zelley
(As reported in the weekly sport paper the "Sportcaster"
in the Wednesday, February 27, 1980 issue.)

"Three boxers from the Victoria Athletics travelled to
Campbell River ... to take part in a 14 bout card staged
by the Campbell River Eagles Boxing Club on
February 23 rd.

Dale Robinson defeated Carl Stafford of Campbell River
in the 75-lb. junior division. Cliff Ballendine edged
Kurt Lang of Port Kells by a 3 - 2 decision. And,
Gary Robinson defeated a boxer from Kamloops in the
intermediate (youth) light-welterweight division.

Robinson opened up in the first round with stinging
jabs to the body and head. Robinson outmoved his
opponent with sharp footwork and effectively slipped
or blocked most of his opponent;s punches and
counterpunched with thumping right crosses and
crunching left hooks. Robinson continued his strong
offense in the second round and retired the Kamllops
boxer at the close of the second round.

Boxing officials included Bert Lowes from Vancouver,
Rick Brough and Brian Zelley from Victoria, and
Bill Donnelly, Peter Shulz, Leo O'Connell and
Dorsey Clayton of Campbell River."

**** This was one of the initial club cards on Vancouver
Island for the start of the Eighties, buy during the decade
there would be plenty of action in club cards and tournaments
in Gold River, Campbell River, Parksville, Nanaimo, Ladysmith,
Duncan and Greater Victoria. It would also, be the early stages
of Rick Brough's term as the Vancouver Island Commissioner
who had replaced Victoria's Howard Curling. The above report
was also a departure from most amateur boxing stories as it
recorded the names of all the officials that is rarely done. ****
THE NEW BEGINNING OF CHAMPIONS: by brian zelley

For the champions of 1980, missing the 1980 Olympics was a
great setback that could never be resolved, but beyond 1980
there would be a new beginning with some new faces and some
of those stars of the late Seventies and 1980 would fight on.

THE SENIOR OPEN CHAMPIONS 1981 to 1983

With the arrival of 1981, no one could guess where the
Canadian amateur story would play-out in the subsequent years.
There was hope, but nobody could guess what would happen
between 1984 and 1996 and beyond in International
tournaments such as
the Olympic Games or the Commonwealth Games.

This is their story and who would be there for action in
1984 and beyond.

STEPHEN NOLAN
Stephen Nolan was one of the stars of 1980 that would continue
to shine for several years. But, in 1984, there was a possibility
that he would not be on the 1984 Olympic boxing team. His fate was
decided at the second senior box-off competition that took place
in Burnaby British Columbia. It would be STEVE PAGENDAM that
would be Ontario featherweight that would be on the Olympic team.

1981: The arrival of KALBHENN, O'SULLIVAN and DEWITT

Nobody could have planned the boxing journey of John, Shawn
and Willie. But, they would fight their way through three
years of action to prepare for their place on the '84 Team.
As early as 1983, there were some heavy expectations for
both Shawn and Willie in the news media, but it would take
action in the ring that would earn the prize of Olympic silver.

JOHN KALBHENN's march to the 1984 LA Olympics
As we look at all of the champions and the team members
throughout the early '80's. Champion John would not be
denied. He would be the Canadian champion for the years
before 1984. Then came some setback that gave the appearance
that he could miss what he had been working for over the
last three years.

It was in the 1984 Senior National that John would have a
quick setback in the prelim action he would be on the short
end of a split decision to boxer GREG GAYLE. Greg would
then defeat Manitob's TOM BARON BC's ROGER LAFLAME.
to face Quebec's SYLVAIN THIBEAULT which Sylvain won.

KALBHENN would attempt to make the A team at the Box-off.
The first box-off competition took place in Halifax, Nova Scotia
where Gayle had to defeat Brad Hortie before facing John.
John won over Greg by another split decision. A couple of weeks
later JOHN KALBHENN would travel to Burnaby, BC for the
the last chance against the then champion THIBEAULT. this time
when it counted, John would not be satisfied with a split or unanimous
decision. He would take to the then champion and in the third round
Kahlbhnn would connect with a serious of head shots that forced the
referee to stop the bout resulting in his advance to the Olympic team.

DALE WALTER, The Pride of Burnaby follow a path
For Dale Walters, there are likely many folks in BC that
would have guessed that Dale would be a senior open star.
Going back to his early days in the Seventies, he was marked
as a star and was recognized as early as 1972 when as a junior
he was allowed to participate in an exhibition match on a card
that included the likes of MUHAMMAD ALI. Also, the Walters
name was well known in British Columbia and beyond since the
Forties with LENNIE WALTERS.

Lennie would have an important
role in the shaping the skills of Dale for his boxing journey
throughout the Seventies and into the Eighties.

Dale Walter winning another bout in the mid-Seventies.

WAYNE GORDON
In 1983, Wayne Gordon would earn a title that would stake his path
to a spot on the 1984 Olympic team. But, for Wayne, we need to
step back to Vancouver Island in the Sixties where the Gordon story
would take shape. If we flashback to the 1963 BV Golden Gloves,
one of the boxers was a member of the Royal Canadian Navy that
always produced a good team of boxers. The boxer was named
Taylor Gordon. But, it wasn't his performance
in the ring that would earn Taylor, International recognition.
Taylor would become a coach and trainer, and would go back to
Nova Scotia and begin his climb up the ranks of many coaches
throughout Canada. In his own club, one of the boxers would
be his son Wayne who would also climb up as a boxing champion
and win a spot on the '84 team.

BILLY DUNLOP, from Verdun to Calgary
Of all the Olympic team members, the story of Billy Dunlop
takes us from Verdun, Quebec to Calgary, Alberta. In 1982,
Billy moved from Quebec to Alberta, but it does not appear
boxing was a high priority. He had competed in Quebec and
had won a few titles then he moved to Calgary and would be
pulled back into boxing with various victories and a shot
at the National title. In 1984, he defeated two boxers
Gaetan Leclerc and Rick Rannelli. In box-off he faced
Quebec's Leclerc in Halifax and stopped him in one round
to earn a place on the '84 Olympic team.

THE TREASURE CHEST OF GOLDEN MEMORIES:
*Each of the many boxers that engaged in activity
between 1981 to 1983 and the 1984 moments likely have
some key memories that stand out. This area is set
aside to add any memories or thoughts by any of the
boxers.BRIAN ZELLEYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05576206081243450543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-748149238621829803.post-34710475247549208162012-01-12T16:25:00.000-08:002012-06-12T15:52:58.007-07:00MAY 1985 BC AMATEUR BOXING NEWS

Getting the names of the senior champions of 1984 is easy to
find, but what is a little more difficult is finding out how
each one made it into the finals and who they defeated to be
named Canadian Championm.

Those under the microscope of interest include:
Steve Beaupre, Billy Dunlop, Dale Walters, Steve Pagendam,
Sylvain Thibeault, Denis Lambert, Kelly Perlette, Lawrence Rolfe,
Rick Duff, Wayne Welsh, Wade Parsons and Lennox Lewis.

Of the 12 boxers, four were members of Team A:
Beaupre, Dunlop, Walters, and Lambert.
The three Team B members were Pagendam, Thibault and Lewis.
thr others were from the Provincial championships and box-off
action" Kelly Perlette and Rick Duff form Alberta
Rolfe and Welsh from British Columbia and Parsons from Nova Scotia.

STEVE BEAUPRE
Steve would face the winner of the Andre Charlebois
and John Farinacci bout. In the finals Beaupre earned
a unanimous decision over Charlebois to once again be a star.

BILLY DUNLOP
Billy would have to earn a win over Gaetan leclerc of Quebec to
face Ontario's Rick Ranelli in the finals of which Billy won.

DALE WALTERS
BC's Dale Walter would win a decision over Robert Fortuna of Ontario
before facing Daniel Paul of Quebec before facing. Paul defeated
B. Mitchell of Manitoba.

STEVE PAGENDAM
Pagendam would have to win over three boxers to earn the featherweight
championship. And, that he did with victories over T Haney, Stephen Nolan,
and Darren Kinequon of Saskatchewan.

SYLVAIN THIBEAULT
Like Steve, Sylvain needed three victories to call himself 1984
Canadian champion. He earned victories over l Blain, Brad Hortie
and Greg Gayle had defeated three opponents before facing
Sylvain for the title. Greg earned a decision over John Kalbhenn,
stopped Tom Barron then struggled to win a split decision over
BC's William Lake star Roger Laflamme. Roger had earned
a split decision over the tough George Mason of the Yukon.

DENIS LAMBERT
lambert earned victories over J. Dupe, Joe Pendry and Peter Britt
to be declared champion. Of importance was the semi-final with
Britt was injury related, so Peter Britt would bounce back to engage
in subsequent Box-off competition.

KELLY PERLETTE
An interesting welterweight competition with Kelly stopping
two opponents to get into the finals to compete against
National A team Wayne Gordon. Gordon had earned
victories over STeve Frame and B. Leger. At the end of
three active rounds in the finals, Kelly earned a 4:1 split
over Nova Scotia's Gordon.
STEVE FRAME, OTTAWA BOXER

SUPER HEAVYWEIGHT FINAL
it was guaranteed to be an excellent fight after
LENNOX LEWIS and VERNON LINKLATER punched and boxed
their way into the finals. After three action packed rounds
it was young Lennox Lewis that would win the decision as the
first step in his Olympic Games journey.

Before the action started on May 26, 1980 at the
Civic Centre at Lansdowne Park in Ottawa, Canada, there
would be a message from coach JOE SANDULO to all
that would be in attendance at the boxing show titled
The Beaver Boxing Club presents "A CARD OF CHAMPIONS"

The message from Joe and the Beaver Boxing Club was addressed
to Ian Clyde and the Canadian National Boxing Team.

Joe's opening line was to the point with great emotion:
"...I want to take this opportunity to say two things,
A very happy welcome to all the boxers and officials of the
Canadian Boxing Team and a sad farewell to one of their
members, our own IAN CLYDE. - Joe Sandulo

By all expectations, this would be Ian's last amateur bout
in Ottawa.

After his amateur days, Ian turned pro.

OLYMPIC MOMENTS for JOEY and IAN
Joey Sandulo was part of the 1948 Canadian Olympic
boxing team along with Frederick Daigle, Armand Savoie,
Eddie Haddad, Clifford Blackburn, John Keenan, and
Adam Faul.

Ian Clyde was part of the 1976 team that included:
Sid McKnight, Chris Ius, Camille Huard,
Chris Clarke, Carmen Rinke, Micael Prevost and

As we look back to the National Championships in 1984, three boxers
would be declared the best of each of the three tournamens.
They were: Eric Grenier, Bill Downey and Steve Pagendam.

In junior National, eric grenier would edge out
Scotty Olson and Stewart Hilton.
The best bout was the Curtis Peterson - Dean Jeffries bout

In the Intermediateor Youth boxing, Bill Downey would
win the price. Some of the other Intermediate champions
would include boxers that would make a name in senior
competition in future years such as Howard and Otis Grant
and Eggerton Marcus. But, the best youth bout in 1984
was the Marc Menard - Greg Johnson lightweight bout.

But, in the senior nationals, STEVE PAGENDAM
would be a triple winner. His three victories would
earn him the Canadian senior featherweight title,
and the bout with Stephen Nolan would be the best bout.
And despite some top boxers, it was PAGENDAM that would
win the big prize of BEST SENIOR BOXER.

Stephan Nolan would win two box-off bouts at Halifax
over Tim harvy and Steve Pagendam. But, being one of
the reipients of the best fight award and to beat Steve
once was not enough to get picked for the Olympic team.
the final showdown would take place in burnaby.
And it would be Pagendam that would prevail.
But, Nolan's large body of achievements have not
gone unrecognized by the Saulte Ste. Marie Sports Hall of Fame.
The Eighties
-by Brian W. Zelley
The first name that comes to mind for those of us from
British Columbia is Dale Walters. But, in July 1984k,
I took time to sit with boxerSteve Pagendam an chat
about the team of 1984 and his brother Jamie Pagendam.

When we look back to the action of the Eighties, there were
a number of champions in the bantamweight and featherweight
senior open class. One of the champions late in the decade
was Saskatchewan boxer Wesley Sunshine. But,
travelling back to 1984, I remember him and all the other
competitors in the Junior Nationals. Not in the habit of
remembering every boxer in every tournament but for this
one, I was picked as one of the folks that had to pick
the best boxer of 1984 Junior Nationals, so it was a
case of watching every bout and coming to some fair
decision.

Some of the other bantams and feathers in the eighties
were Danny Thompson, Bill Ranelli, Stephen Nolan,
Bill Downey and Geronimo Bie. Each would follow his
own path, and some would be remembered while others
may be forgotten or only remembered by a small circle
of friends, but that's the way it has always been.

So this small piece is to try and recognize the boxers
from Bill Downey to Wesley Sunshine. And, thank them
for their contribution to the sport of amateur boxing
in Canada.BRIAN ZELLEYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05576206081243450543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-748149238621829803.post-20021490779283365822011-11-18T14:08:00.000-08:002011-11-18T14:21:39.583-08:00.FLYWEIGHTS OF THE EIGHTIESLIGHT-FLYS and FLYS; BY BRIAN ZELLEY

Looking back before the Eighties, we had names such as
Walter Henry, Jak Snaith and Ian Clyde. And Ian who
first became senior chamion in 1973 was there to begin
the new the Eighties.

Remember when they touched gloves and had their hands
raised high under the bright lights:
Willie DeWit and Shawn O'Sullivan, Gold
and Kevin mcDermott, bronze.

THE 1984 SENIOR BOX-OFF
A dozen boxers would arrive in Burnaby, BC in time for the actuob
that took place from May 25 to 27th. at the BCABA Training Centre.
Two of the boxers would have to engage in two bouts to determine which one
would be considered for the Olympic Team. In the first bout, the winner
between Canadian champion Dennis Lambert and Peter Britt was
Peter. However, to replace a champion required two wins, and in the
second bout Lambert pulled out the win and became a Olympic team
member.
Steve Pagendam would earn a decision over Stephen Nolan
to secure a spot on the team, along with John Kalbhenn and
Rick Duff. Shawn O'Sullivan would win over Lawrence Rolfe.
Alberta's RICK DUFF would get past Darrell Flint to
earn a shot. But, Manitoba's KEN JOHNSON would decision
BC's Wayne Welsh, the Canadian champion, but, Johnson would
not be selected for the Olympic Team for Los Angeles.

Then there would be the training camp in July 1984
with most of the 1984 Olympic team members, and some
of the other boxers such as Steve Beaupre
various coaches and officials such as Taylor Gordon.

1985 SENIOR NATIONALS
The 1985 Senior Nationals would be very interesting.
There were some surprises with BC boxer Joe Pendry
winning the Canadian welterweight title, and two
boxers than were on the 1984 Olympic team were
defeated along before the finals.

Selected as best 1985 fighter was ASIF DAR.
Even back in his junior days, Asif was a classy
and winning boxer. In 1980 after punching his
way into the finals, he met Victoria's
Cliff Ballendine. Dar not only won the
fight in the Junior Nationals but was selected
as the best junior boxer in Canada.

1986 Commonwealth Games, Canadiam medals:
Scotty Olson, Steve Beaupre, Bill Downey, Asif Dar,
Howard Grant, John Shaw, Dan Sherry, Brent Kosolofski,
Dominic D'Amico and Lennox Lewis.

POST 1988 OLYMPIC GAME, OLD FACES AND THE NEW BREED
After the 1988 Olympic Games, some would turn pro like
Lennox Lewis, others would remain a couple more years,
and others would say goodbye. Then there were new faces
that had won titles in the juniors and youth boxing.
At the close of the Eighties some of the 1989 senior champions
would be and important part of the Nineties such as
MARK LEDUC and BILLY IRWIN.
1980 THE VETERAN CHMPION IAN CLYDE
Of the 1980 champions, the most experienced one was IAN CLYDE.
Ian first won a senior title in 1973 and continued to be an active
champion until 1980. He had been in previous International
tournaments including the 1976 Olympic Games, but the team
of 1980 lost out on the chance to represent Canada in 1980
due to a political boycott of the USSR. Being the team
leader, Clyde took the difficult step to announce his
understanding of the decision by the Canadian Government.
champions from 1979. Laurie Mann and Kevin
Howard. Boxer Jamie Ollenberger
had paid his dues in his early years of boxing,
but in 1980 he was one of the best and exciting
boxers from BC and he was 1980 BC Golden Boy.
Ollenberger would be a repeat BC Golden Boy
in 1981,then he would turn pro.

Introduction
In the June 1985 issue of the BC Amateur Boxing News
I prepared a three page report on the Senior Nationals starting
with the BC Amateur Boxing team then listing many
of the competitors from other provinces.

Then i started to summarize the results. So for this report
I will copy the details of that June 1985 story, then update
it with some bits and pieces so many years later.

BC BOXING TEAM
Augusto Dos Reis, John Henry Wilson, Tim Cessford,
Joe Pendry, Joe Martin, Andrew Riley, Terry Dermott,
Alex Bankier, Gary Serko, Wayne Welsh, and Brian Lansing.
Coaches: Ken Marjoram and Mike Sartori. Manager: Dave Thompson.

Some of the other Boxers: (note: excluding province and towns)
Steven D'Sousa, John Farinacci, Scotty Olson, Jeff Hill,
Steve Beaupre, Chuck Evans, Mark Menard, Fitzroy Solomon,
Asif Dar, Frank Sigmer, Steve Nolan, Mike Spiry, Robert McDonald,
Howard Grant, Bud Bird, Rod Simonds, Tom Walker, Tom Young,
Wayne Chandler, Greg Gayle, Otis Grant, Kelly Perlette,

LIGHT-FLYWEIGHT
Victoria's AUGUSTO DOS REIS faced the tough SCOTTY OLSON
of Alberta. In 1984, Olson was the Junior light-flyweight champion.
In the selection of best junior for 1984 Olson was the best of eight
going into the final. His excellent performance over Quebec's
RENE CADRAN made him a strong choice. However, the picture
perfect performance by ERIC GRENIER ...made Grenier the top choice.
In the June 1984 issue of the BC AMATEUR BOXIG NEWS, I stated:

If the choice was limited to heart and determination
Alberta's Scotty Olson would be the top contender...

Olson defeated Dos Reis and won the 1985 senior championship by
defeating STEVE D'SOUSA of Quebec.

FLYWEIGHT
Astoria's TERRY DERMOTT lost out to JEFF HILL,
In the finals, Hill lost a 4/1 decision to STEVE BEAUPRE.

FEATHERWEIGHT
Vernon's JOHN HENRY WILLSON had an outstanding performance
in 1984 when he won an Intermediate National Championship. John
earned a spot on the BC Team with a win over classy boxer
RICK ALBRECHTSEN of williams Lake. This time John Henry
dropped a decision to Quebec's classy MICHEL MOFFA.
However, Moffa dropped a 4/1 decision to JAMIE PAGENDAM.
Back in 1984 when I spoke to Olympic boxer STEVE PAGENDAM
at the Canadian Olympic Team training site, Steve told me that
he had a brother who was better...Well Jamie is on his way with
his victory over Michel.

LIGHTWEIGHT
BC Team member ALEX BANKIER dropped a 5/0 decision to
STEVE NOLAN. In the final, Nolan lost to ASIF DAR
of Ontario who was named the 1985 OUTSTANDING FIGHTER.

LIGHT WELTERWEIGHT
parksville's TIM CESSFORD won his opening round, but
then lost to GREG GAYLE. In the finals Gayle defeated
Howard Grant.

WELTERWEIGHT
Kimberley's JOE PENDRY was in a division with two members
of the 1984 Olympic Team, WAYNE GORDON and DENNIS LAMBERT.
Lambert won his first bout then lost out toe DEWITH FRASER.
Pendry faced WAYNE GORDON and won a split decision. In the finals,
Pendry had to settle for a 3/2 split decision win over Dewith Fraser.

LIGHT MIDDLEWEIGHT
BC's GARY SERKO lost a decision to OTIS GRANT in the
semi-finals, then Grant stopped Alberta's KELLY PERLETTE.

MIDDLEWEIGHT
BC's JOE MARTIN defeated LINDON LINKLATER in his
first bout, but lost to National A team member DARRYL FLINT
In the finals, Flint was upset by DANNY SHERRY.

LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT
Kelowna's 1984 Canadian champion WAYNE WELSH started strong
by stopping his first opponent, but lost out to EGERTON MARCUS.
Marcus then defeated DANIEL DESROCHERS who had won the semi-finals
with a victory over National A team member KEN JOHNSON.

HEAVYWEIGHT
ANDREW RILEY was eliminated and then DOMENIC D'AMICO
won gold, Peter Petric silver, Bill Hickey and Wade Parsons bronze.

SUPER HEAVYWEIGHT
BRIAN LANSING of Elk Valley defeated his first opponent but
in the finals, he lost out to highly rated LENNOX LEWIS.
THE NOVEMBER 1983 edition
It was the first issue that I was involved in at the Provincial
level. I had no idea how long my term would last, but the first
issue there was not a lot activity to report on but on the front
page, there was a quote from BOB CHAMBERS 1954

If we can instill in our boxers the will to win fairly
and at the same time maintain the concept of our
democratic principles, then at least part of our future
senior citizens will ensure no one will violate the terms of
human dignity." BOB CHAMBERS, 1954
Greater Victoria Amateur Boxing Association.

THE JIMMY SYME AWARD

As part of this first edition another important was the importance
of duty beyond the ring. To emphisize this important concept part
of the edition covered the early Jimmy Symes Award winners.

The following had photos included in the issue:

It was three long years of producing news in
a regular publicationon Vancouver Island boxing
and then BC boxing. Countless hours
researching, communicating, attending events but
it all ended in January 1986 when the Executive
of the BC Amateur Boxing Association wanted
more control over the content and micro-managing.

Prior to that, arrangements were made to produce
a BC BOXING GUIDE
and the cost would have been covered by advertising.
But, some coaches in boxing thought that advertising
for a guide may take away from their opportunities
to get advertising dollars, so the time and money
investedin the venture went south and the prelim
stuff and outlines were trashed.

So, without support, the writing was on the wall
and it was time to say goodbye concerning the future
publications of the BC AMATEUR BOXING NEWS.

BC AMATEUR BOXING NEWS - January 1986
My last publication of THE NEWS happened to
be at a time when numerous pro and amateur
boxing cards were being cancelled in places
like Nanaimo, Vancouver and Victoria while the
insiders of Boxing in BC were pumping up the volume
that good things were going to happen. In some cases
a few good things did happen, but the best thing
for the future would be Victoria obtaining the
1994 COMMONWEALTH GAMES and the rest is history.
1994 COMMONWEALTH GAMES BOXING Story: By Brian W. Zelley, B.Com., CA -

.As I look back into the past and revisit the 1994 Commonwealth Games boxing event that took place
in Esquimalt, BC (Greater Victoria), I remember seeing Prince Philip sitting in the audience observing the
action, I remember seeing one of my old coaches BERT LOWES from 1968 volunteering as part of security
(in earlier years, he had been an referee and judge at International events and local club shows),
Then there was Gold River coach MONTY BROWN helping in the corner for one of the foreign boxers.

But the real story for amateur boxing begins in 1989 with the appointment of a boxing committee as part of
the sports committee - the original committee was comprised of Hassan Sunderani, Brian Zelley,
Mike Sartori, Glynn Jones and later Ian Weir and then others such as Bert Lowes and George Armson.

At the time of my appointment, I was a School Trustee with the Greater Victoria School Board,
but my term was coming to an end and there would be more time to get involved with the organizing
process. One of the first requirements was for chairman Sunderani to put together a report. As part of the report,
I put together a mini-history of boxing from Greater Victoria, but much of the data was from my previous work
when I was the editor of the "BC Amateur Boxing News" and publicity chairman for the 1984 Vancouver Island
Amateur Boxing Championships which was a big deal as it was a revival of a tournament that last took place in 1964
with one of the boxers being FRED DESROSIERS who would be one of our 1964 Olympic boxers.

As 1989 turned into 1990, the boxing committee needed to build a volunteer base that would make things happen.
To begin the process of reaching out to ex-boxing folks and supporters of the sport, a public meeting was
arranged in the boardroom of the Victoria Commonwealth Games Society - April 21, 1990.

The first public meeting:
Attending the first public meeting were John Stothart of the VCGS, and boxing committee members
Hassan Sunderani, Brian Zelley and Mike Sartori, and others including Dr. Dan Buie,
Wes Byrnell, Pud Smith, Ian Duddy, Bert Wilkinson, Rick Brough, Ian Weir.

(photo: Pud Smith)

From the first wave of volunteers, Victoria had a good cross section of experienced folks including two
former Vancouver Island Amateur Boxing Commissioners in BERT WILKINSON and RICK BROUGH.
Also, MIKE SARTORI was a boxing coach and at one time he was one of the Team BC coaches for
National competition. Dr. Dan had been a ringside doctor at some pro boxing cards. IAN WEIR
was one of the Victoria boxers that would be part of the revival of amateur boxing in Greater Victoria
in 1974. IAN DUDDY was one of the founding directors of the Victoria Athletic Association in 1976
and would serve for a couple of years as the manager of the VAA boxing program along with coaches
Lou Bujdoso, Brian Zelley and Mike Caird. Lou would later spin-off and form the Victoria Jaycees
Boxing Club of which Sartori and Zelley would join as coaches. Sartori would also continue to host
the BC Diamond Belt tournament after a revival in 1980 into the mid-Eighties such as the 1985 tournament.

GOALS & PLANS
1. Establish a training Centre,
2. Revive the Greater Victoria Amateur Boxing Association
3. Spreading the Word - A general public meeting for volunteers.

A GREATER VICTORIA VOLUNTEERS MEETING - May 13, 1990

The earlier meeting with 11 bodies was important, but there was work to do to reach out to more
potential volunteers at a public site. On May 13, 1990 the group of eleven picked a perfect public site
at the popular Princess Mary Restaurant . By the start of the 10:00 a.m. meeting the list of potential
volunteers was raised to 25 with more in future days.

Some of the additional persons with a backgound in boxing included:
JOURNEY TO SEATTLE - 1990 GOODWILL GAMES

Members of the various Sports Committees were given the opportunity to send at least two members to observe
the International event. For boxing, two of us were set to go but the boxing chairman didn't go. So, I went alone
but it was for the finals and not the beginning which would have been more of a learning experience. But it was kind of cool going to the event and running into folks like MONTY BROWN and RON WHALLEY. But due to the timing on the last day
it was too late to get the proper ID to move freely and speak with official and competitors. And unless you get the right access
and freedom of movement, it is reduced to a moment of entertainment rather than an information gathering process to help
future planning.
Also as in previous decades there would be action in the Pan Am Games, the 1994 Commonwealth Games
in Greater Victoria in 1994 and Games in other locations, plus the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games with some interesting
results.

Some of the stars of the Eighties that would see action in the Nineties would include
BILL IRWIN, MARK LEDUC, RAYMOND DOWNEY and GERONIMO BEI. But, as in past decades
there would be many new champions such as Domenic Filane Figliomeni, Michael Strange
and Robert Dale Brown. Along the way other names would appear such as Jason Heit and Shane Hinton.
In the closing years of the nineties some of the champions would compete in the 2000 Olympics in Australia.BRIAN ZELLEYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05576206081243450543noreply@blogger.com0
