1984 CANADIAN SENIOR NATIONALS BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS

1984 CANADIAN SENIOR BOXING CHAMPION: By Brian Zelley
Getting the names of the senior champions of 1984 is easy to
find, but what is a little more difficult is finding out how
each one made it into the finals and who they defeated to be
named Canadian Championm.

Those under the microscope of interest include:
Steve Beaupre, Billy Dunlop, Dale Walters, Steve Pagendam,
Sylvain Thibeault, Denis Lambert, Kelly Perlette, Lawrence Rolfe,
Rick Duff, Wayne Welsh, Wade Parsons and Lennox Lewis.

Of the 12 boxers, four were members of Team A:
Beaupre, Dunlop, Walters, and Lambert.
The three Team B members were Pagendam, Thibault and Lewis.
thr others were from the Provincial championships and box-off
action" Kelly Perlette and Rick Duff form Alberta
Rolfe and Welsh from British Columbia and Parsons from Nova Scotia.

STEVE BEAUPRE
Steve would face the winner of the Andre Charlebois
and John Farinacci bout. In the finals Beaupre earned
a unanimous decision over Charlebois to once again be a star.

BILLY DUNLOP
Billy would have to earn a win over Gaetan leclerc of Quebec to
face Ontario's Rick Ranelli in the finals of which Billy won.

DALE WALTERS
BC's Dale Walter would win a decision over Robert Fortuna of Ontario
before facing Daniel Paul of Quebec before facing. Paul defeated
B. Mitchell of Manitoba.

STEVE PAGENDAM
Pagendam would have to win over three boxers to earn the featherweight
championship. And, that he did with victories over T Haney, Stephen Nolan,
and Darren Kinequon of Saskatchewan.

SYLVAIN THIBEAULT
Like Steve, Sylvain needed three victories to call himself 1984
Canadian champion. He earned victories over l Blain, Brad Hortie
and Greg Gayle had defeated three opponents before facing
Sylvain for the title. Greg earned a decision over John Kalbhenn,
stopped Tom Barron then struggled to win a split decision over
BC's William Lake star Roger Laflamme. Roger had earned
a split decision over the tough George Mason of the Yukon.

DENIS LAMBERT
lambert earned victories over J. Dupe, Joe Pendry and Peter Britt
to be declared champion. Of importance was the semi-final with
Britt was injury related, so  Peter Britt would bounce back to engage
in subsequent Box-off competition.

KELLY PERLETTE
An interesting welterweight competition with Kelly stopping
two opponents to get into the finals to compete against
National A team Wayne Gordon. Gordon had earned
victories over STeve Frame and B. Leger. At the end of
three active rounds in the finals, Kelly earned a 4:1 split
over Nova Scotia's Gordon.
STEVE FRAME, OTTAWA BOXER

SUPER HEAVYWEIGHT FINAL
it was guaranteed to be an excellent fight after
LENNOX LEWIS and VERNON LINKLATER punched and boxed
their way into the finals. After three action packed rounds
it was young Lennox Lewis that would win the decision as the
first step in his Olympic Games journey.

JOE SANDULO and IAN CLYDE May 26, 1980 BEAVER BOXING CLUB

Before the action started on May 26, 1980 at the
Civic Centre at Lansdowne Park in Ottawa, Canada, there
would be a message from coach JOE SANDULO to all
that would be in attendance at the boxing show titled
The Beaver Boxing Club presents "A CARD OF CHAMPIONS"

The message from Joe and the Beaver Boxing Club was addressed
to Ian Clyde and the Canadian National Boxing Team.

Joe's opening line was to the point with great emotion:
"...I want to take this opportunity to say two things,
A very happy welcome to all the boxers and officials of the
Canadian Boxing Team and a sad farewell to one of their
members, our own IAN CLYDE. - Joe Sandulo

By all expectations, this would be Ian's last amateur bout
in Ottawa.

After his amateur days, Ian turned pro.

OLYMPIC MOMENTS for JOEY and IAN
Joey Sandulo was part of the 1948 Canadian Olympic
boxing team along with Frederick Daigle, Armand Savoie,
Eddie Haddad, Clifford Blackburn, John Keenan, and
Adam Faul.

Ian Clyde was part of the 1976 team that included:
Sid McKnight, Chris Ius, Camille Huard,
Chris Clarke, Carmen Rinke, Micael Prevost and
Roger Fortin.

ian would also be part of the select few that would be picked for our 1980 Olympic team, but International politics would crush the hopes of Ian and the team, and it would be Ian that would take the lead role in accepting the disappointment with dignity and grace.

GRENIER, DOWNEY and PAGENDAM = The Best of 1984

THE BEST OF 1984 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS by Brian Zelley

As we look back to the National Championships in 1984, three boxers
would be declared the best of each of the three tournamens.
They were: Eric Grenier, Bill Downey and Steve Pagendam.

In junior National, eric grenier would edge out
Scotty Olson and Stewart Hilton.
The best bout was the Curtis Peterson - Dean Jeffries bout

In the Intermediateor Youth boxing, Bill Downey would
win the price. Some of the other Intermediate champions
would include boxers that would make a name in senior
competition in future years such as Howard and Otis Grant
and Eggerton Marcus. But, the best youth bout in 1984
was the Marc Menard - Greg Johnson lightweight bout.

But, in the senior nationals, STEVE PAGENDAM
would be a triple winner. His three victories would
earn him the Canadian senior featherweight title,
and the bout with Stephen Nolan would be the best bout.
And despite some top boxers, it was PAGENDAM that would
win the big prize of BEST SENIOR BOXER.

Stephan Nolan would win two box-off bouts at Halifax
over Tim harvy and Steve Pagendam. But, being one of
the reipients of the best fight award and to beat Steve
once was not enough to get picked for the Olympic team.
the final showdown would take place in burnaby.
And it would be Pagendam that would prevail.
But, Nolan's large body of achievements have not
gone unrecognized by the Saulte Ste. Marie Sports Hall of Fame.
